Candling Day is a hatch log for people incubating eggs at home, in a 4-H project or in a classroom. This page explains, plainly, what the app does and does not do with your information.
What the app stores, and where
All of the following stays on your device, in the app's local database, and is never transmitted anywhere:
- Batch details: species, incubator or hen, set date, egg count and settings
- Temperature and humidity readings you type in, with their time
- Turning counts and keeper's rounds
- Per-egg candling results, notes and any photo you attach to an egg record
- Pip, zip and hatch times, and hatch record notes
- Your preferences: units, reminder times, haptics, incubators and hens you've added
None of this is linked to your identity, because the app never asks for one. There is no account, sign-in or profile of any kind.
Camera and photo library
If you choose to attach a photo to a candling record, the app asks for camera access or opens the system photo picker at that moment, and only for that purpose. A photo you take or choose is saved with the egg record on your device. The app does not read your photo library beyond the single image you pick, and does not upload photos anywhere.
Notifications
If you turn on reminders for turning, candling or lockdown, the app schedules local notifications on your device. These are not push notifications from a server — nothing about your batches or schedule leaves your phone to generate them.
Reading Shelf
The Reading Shelf opens a small set of public extension-service and poultry-club pages inside the app's own web view, so you never have to leave the app to read them. These pages are loaded directly from their publishers (for example a university extension service or a poultry club), using a private, non-persistent browsing session. The app itself sends nothing about you to these sites beyond the ordinary request a browser makes to load a page. Candling Day does not track which pages you open.

Data retention and deletion
Your batches and records stay on your device for as long as the app is installed. Deleting the app deletes this data along with it. You can also remove individual batches, eggs or photos at any time from within the app.
Children's privacy
Candling Day does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, because it does not collect personal information at all. The app is often used in classrooms under a teacher's supervision, and nothing typed into it — including anything a student enters — ever leaves the device.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date. Because the app works entirely offline, a change here would only ever reflect a change in what the app itself does, never a silent change to data already on your device.
